Changes happening with the “de minimis thresholds” rule

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is intensifying efforts to crack down on small package imports, which is a key issue for many marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart,eBay, and Etsy. CBP has suspended some brokers for non-compliance as part of these efforts to enhance enforcement.

This enforcement might suggest that the government will take even more steps soon.

The current “de minimis thresholds” rule, which exempts imports valued at $800 or less from duties and taxes, benefits several marketplaces.

These platforms facilitate numerous small-value transactions directly from overseas sellers, allowing them to avoid substantial customs duties and taxes, thereby making their goods more attractive to U.S. consumers due to lower prices and faster shipping times.

Temu, in particular, benefits from this rule as its entire business model, especially when the company started, relies on this threshold.
